PS4 Controller Battery Life: Tips and Tricks to Increase the Charge of Your Dualshock 4

We love the PS4 and the DualShock 4 controller. But if there is one area where it is insufficient, it is battery life.

There’s nothing quite like having to grab a USB cable to charge it and let it roam your living room for a tense ride of Apex Legends. However, there are some things you can do to extend the battery life a bit more.

There are a few specific items that can cause the PS4 controller to seriously drain the battery for approximately 8 hours. Many people point to the glowing light bar on its back, but that’s not the only culprit.

The PS4 controller will stay on for as long as your PS4 is on. It’s great while you’re playing, but what about when you’re on a Netflix marathon session? You don’t need to have it on all the time for this. Then there are the speakers and the vibration motors.

Reduce the brightness of the light bar of the PS4 controller

This change will have as little impact on your gaming experience as possible, so it’s a no-brainer to start with.

You cannot turn off the light bar completely, but you can reduce its brightness to minimize battery drain. Here’s how to do it:

You can minimize the light bar by accessing the quick menu and selecting Dualshock 4 from your devices. Recent updates have made this operation even easier to perform.

Turn off your PS4 controller vibrations

This now has a deeper effect on the game. Vibration is an important part of immersing yourself in a game world. Who doesn’t like to feel the rumble of an engine in DriveClub or the satisfying kick of a rifle in Destiny? However, this feature does feed off the battery life of your PS4 controller. Follow these steps to turn it off:

On your PS4, go to Settings> Devices> Controllers> Activate vibrations then uncheck the box and the vibrations will be disabled.

Reduce the volume of your PS4 controller

Having the speakers on the DualShock 4 can shorten battery life. Here’s how to reduce the volume:

On your PS4, go to Settings> Devices> Controllers> Volume control, where you can then adjust the volume using the left or right buttons on the controller.

The speakerphone is only used in some titles, and it’s usually pop-up for the on-screen action, but if you want a few more minutes it’s worth the little effort.

Automatically turn off your PS4 controllers

One of the main reasons the battery drains so quickly is that the PS4 controller does not turn off when the console is on. Here’s how to change that:

On your PS4, go to Settings> Power saving settings> Automatically deactivate DualShock 4 – it is automatically disabled, which means your PS4 controller will stay on until the battery is depleted. Instead, set it to 10 minutes to save battery as much as possible. The other options are to turn it off after 30 or 60 minutes. That means you’ll have to turn it back on when you sit down, but it’s a small price to pay.

Turn off your PS4 controller

If you don’t want to wait 10 minutes, you can manually turn off your PS4 controller by pressing the PlayStation button on the controller for 10 seconds.

This is a bit of a problem if you are trying to watch a movie as it kicks you out of your current app. To combat this problem, press the O button then X (eg for Netflix) to continue watching while holding down the PS button. You should have enough time to get back to what you were looking at before the controller turns off.

Get a DualShock 4 battery pack

You can now get officially licensed Venom rechargeable batteries for your PS4 controller. These batteries attach to the bottom of the controller and add a claimed 20 hour run time. However, they change the weight and shape of the controller. So try to buy them first, in case you don’t like the change.

We spun the Venom PS4 rechargeable battery pack and gave it a full review. While it couldn’t deliver the extra 20 hours of playtime it claimed, we were able to more than double the battery life of our DualShock 4 while using it.

Get a second DualShock 4 controller or use your PS Vita

Having a second PS4 controller isn’t just useful for multiplayer action on the same screen. It also means that you can have one in charge while you are playing your favorite games with the other. If you’re charging your controllers through the PS4, however, make sure that the USB ports remain powered, even in idle mode. To do this :

On your PS4, go to Settings> Devices> Power saving settings> Define the functions available in idle mode> Power the USB ports and activate the option.

If you have a PS Vita, you can also use it as a controller. This is not ideal as you will have to use the rear touchpad for buttons like L2 and R2 which do not exist on the Vita,

Replace the battery of your PS4 controller

The last way to improve the battery life of your PS4 controller is to get your hands dirty.

The PS4 controller has a 1000mAh battery, but you can purchase a 2000mAh DualShock 4 replacement battery and install it yourself. It’s not as complicated as you might think and it will double your controller’s battery life, although it will void the warranty.

You might have a hard time finding an official battery version, so if you’re buying a third-party device, make sure it’s good quality by checking reviews.
