Not that long ago, Microsoft released a new version of Word and its other Office apps every two years. These launches were eagerly awaited, and there were relatively few new features.

While Microsoft still produces stand-alone versions of these applications, most of the new features are behind the paid Microsoft 365. The subscription offers many features besides Word, Excel and PowerPoint, but if you only use the features basic, it is difficult to justify the cost.

Fortunately, there are plenty of other options if you want to start using Word or any of the other Microsoft Office apps. You can access it on all your devices, whether you’re working on a phone, tablet, laptop or PC.

The downside to this free is that you will not have access to all the functions. For this you will need to upgrade to the paid version by subscribing to Microsoft 365.

You will be able to open and read documents, but will only be able to edit them from a screen smaller than 10 inches. So forget your computer or large tablet.

If you are a user of Apple products then this is only possible from your iPhone, standard iPad, Air and Mini. The Pro only allows file playback.

Microsoft Office applications are only free on mobile devices (phone or tablet).

If you download them to your PC, then their use will be limit when opening and closing documents.

To access the editing features, you will need to either subscribe to Microsoft 365 Personal, from € 69, either go through its Cloud service, it will be up to you at 7 € / month.

Otherwise, there are the programs Exchange Online and Sharepoint online, these are more intended for professionals.

WPS Office, FreeOffice Where Google docs are other free suites and services that give you similar benefits.
