Regardless of the size and durability of a battery, sooner or later it needs to be topped up, and the bigger your iPhone, the longer it can take.
Wish you knew a faster way to charge your iOS? There are different ways to optimize its charging time, in particular by using a Lightning cable with a USB-C charger or even a MagSafe.
The charging velocity depends on the model and the charging technology used. Many users prefer wireless charging, but the best way is by cable.
Charges your iPhone via USB-C to Lightning cable
To charge your iPhone 13 or 14, the best thing would be to go through its Lightning port and a USB-C adapter.
Using a technology called USB Power Delivery (USB PD), iPhones can be fast-charged with 20W or more of power. The battery then fills up much faster than the USB-As allowed, especially the 5W ones that Apple used to include in the box of its smartphones.
The brand claims that this type of fast charging offers a 50% boost in about 30 minutes.
When choosing your adapter, consider the following:
- Support at least 20W charging power
- Be equipped with the correct USB-C port
According to several tests, the iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max can charge up to 29 watts, and the iPhone 14 up to 25 W. So an adapter with at least 30 W could offer any further. If you wish, then you can also use the charger of your MacBook.
Choosing the right cables
Apple now offers a USB-C to Lightning cable on all its new iPhones, compared to USB-A for older models.
Just make sure you have a USB-C charger of at least 20W with a decent USB-C to Lightning cable, of the Anker brand for example, or the supplied Apple cable. A charger of at least 30W, as explained above, is an even better choice for fast charging.
Also make sure it is quality, not the cheapest, and MFi certified (Made for iPhone). Finally, think about its length and also take into account its resistance and robustness.
Other fast charging tips
To charge your iPhone as quickly as possible, the best would be to turn it off, or put it in airplane mode, activate low power mode, reduce the brightness of your screen and not use it when it is is in charge. In particular, keep your iOS away from heat or cold.
Turning off a feature called Optimized Battery Charging makes an iPhone charge 100% faster because it helps preserve your phone’s battery life by reducing its charge when it reaches 80%. Switching to dark mode can also save your iPhone battery.
Finally, remove your smartphone from its case to prevent harmful overheating.
Charge your iPhone with MagSafe
Since the release of iPhone 12, Apple has introduced a new charging product. MagSafe is a standard that allows accessories, including chargers and batteries, to be attached to the smartphone via magnets. Indeed, it attaches magnetically to the back and charges the device by induction.
This solution has several advantages over conventional wireless chargers, including higher performance and up to 50% better efficiency than conventional Qi.
Thanks to the charger MagSafeall iPhone 12, 13 and 14 models can charge with a maximum of 15W. This is double the 7.5W speed offered by wireless charging via the Qi standard used from the iPhone 8 to iPhone 11, as well as Android.
Note that only the MagSafe reach this velocity, thanks to its magnetic attachment which makes the connection more efficient.
Charge your iPhone with a Qi charger
Like almost all current high-end smartphones, recent iPhones also support wireless charging via the Qi standard.
Compared to MagSafe, the process is significantly longer with a maximum charging power of 7.5 watts, half as fast and efficient.
On the plus side, the Qi chargers are compatible with almost all devices that support wireless charging. So you can provide a power source for your other devices, even Android.
Charge your iPhone with an external charger
When you’re on the move and run out of battery, a external charger will be your saviour. This can be a fast Lightning cable or wireless connection, with the same limitations as mentioned above.
With MagSafe, you have the option of choosing a wireless portable battery that magnetically attaches to the back of your iPhone. This is a quick and much more convenient method.
Evolution of autonomy
With the release of the iPhone 11, the battery life had already increased considerably, but Apple made the biggest leap in 2021 thanks to continuous optimization of energy-consuming components.
The iPhone 13 and 14 Pro Max, which have the largest battery of all, can support up to 25 hours of continuous video playback (according to Apple’s tests), compared to 12 hours for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Our own tests, which put the processor to the test, also prove that the latest iPhones hold the battery very well. The iPhone 13 Pro Max ran for 11 hours and 41 minutes (701 minutes). That’s three hours longer than the duration of the iPhone 12 Pro (8 hours and 41 minutes, or 521 minutes), which was already very good. That of the iPhone 14 Pro Max is slightly less powerful but still offers roughly the same capacity.
