How to transfer large files via Google Drive?

If you are reading this post, chances are you have already faced the need to transfer rather large files without success. Truth be told, it is very easy to transfer small data over the Internet. But when these files are large (we are talking about the order of tens of gigabytes), it becomes a real challenge.

Fortunately, technology has not left us without a way out. As shown in this tutorial, Google Drive, this data storage application offered by the giant Google allows you to perform large file transfers on the Internet.

Share up to 100TB with Google Drive

It is possible to upload just about any type of file to Google Drive without compromising its quality or format. The application offers various storage capacities that vary from 2 GB to 100 TB depending on the user’s account. But if you want to send large files through your personal Gmail account, you have 15 GB of free space. However, you can get more by purchasing the option that’s right for you.

Set up by the American company Google, whose name it bears so proudly, Google Drive requires that you have a Gmail email address before you can access its services. On this basis, it is possible to access the application interface by following the two methods explained below.

Option 1

  1. From the Chrome browser, click on the menu icon located at the top right of your screen.
  2. Then click on the “Drive” icon from the options available.
  3. On the next page, you will have to choose the account to use or enter the credentials of said account and click on “Next” to connect.

  1. Here, you just have to access the address https://drive.google.com/drive/ through your browser.
  2. Once redirected to the Google Drive site, you will be asked to enter your personal login information. Then follow the process described in step 3 of option 1.

Once you are logged into the platform, you can now share your files. Here is the process for doing so.

  1. Within the Google Drive window, in the upper left corner, you will find a button labeled “+ New” which you will need to click.
  2. Once done, you will have the choice between “Import a file” and “Import a folder”. By choosing one of these options (in this case “Import a file”), your computer’s file explorer will open so that you can choose the file (s) or folder (s) to share.
  3. So choose the desired items, then click “Open” or “Open”. For your information, Google Drive is capable of handling very large files in the order of 5 TB. However, your storage space should have this capacity.
  4. After choosing the required files, Google Drive will start importing them to its Cloud. A small window will appear in this regard and allow you to follow the progress of the download.

You must wait for the files to finish loading before closing the Google Drive window. In this case, the loading will be interrupted and everything will have to be restarted. Said loading time depends mainly on the size of the files and the performance of your Internet connection.

When the files are finished downloading, check that they have been uploaded by accessing them from your Google Drive interface. If so, you can proceed to share them. For that :

  1. Right click on the name of the file you want to share. If there are several files, you will need to select them first, then hold down the “CTRL” key before right-clicking. Then look for (then click on) the “Share” option in the contextual menu that opens.
  2. In the new window that appears, you will be able to share your file according to one of the methods offered. The option at the top of the pop-up is to share your files with the recipients of your choice based on their name, email address, or group title.
  3. The option available in the lower part of the pop-up allows file sharing through the generation of a single link.

Whichever method you choose, you will need to decide on the level of permission to grant to the recipients of the share. Google Drive indeed allows three levels of roles to be assigned to these people. These are the roles of:

  • Reader (these recipients will not be able to modify shared files);
  • Commentator (these recipients will be able to read and add comments);
  • Editor (these recipients have the ability to read, comment on, and edit shared files).

Share the file with specific people

The option to share files with specific people requires:

  • that you know exactly who wants to access the files;
  • whether you have their contacts on Google (in case you choose to enter their name or the name of the group they belong to) or know their email address.

If you choose this option, you will need to:

  1. enter the contact of your recipients by entering their name, group name or respective email address;
  2. decide the level of permission they can have when accessing files;
  3. write a message to notify them of the reason for sharing or the specificity of the files shared with them (optional);
  4. click on “Send”. As we will see later in this post, when this step is completed, an electronic message is sent to each recipient to notify them of the action taken.

Generate a link to share

This option allows you to share the resource link with a group of people who may not be your Contacts or whose email addresses you do not know. You will then just need to get the link in question and send it to them through the appropriate channel. If you don’t really know all the people who will be able to take advantage of said resources, it would be wise to use this option.

  1. Click on the “Edit” option after choosing to share the file (s).
  2. Decide whether the files to be shared can be accessed by anyone who has the link or only those who have permission. In this case, you will need to add each of these people using the option available at the top of the pop-up. Otherwise, you will have the option to grant access to shared files once they request it. This access request will be made simply when they try to access the files by clicking on the link you send them.
  3. Decide on the authorization level to be granted to beneficiaries of shared files.
  4. Copy the link generated by Google Drive.
  5. Click on “Finish” to finish.

How to download the file?

Once your recipient receives the shared resources link or an email notifying them, they will need to go to the Google Drive platform in order to download the file. The recipient obviously has the option of accessing the files without downloading them to their device. However, if he wishes to do so, he must:

  1. Access the email sent by Google Drive notifying him of the file sharing he now enjoys.
  2. Click on the “Open” button available in the body of the received email.
  3. At this stage, he will be able to see the different files that you had shared using Google Drive.
  4. Right click on the file (s) he wishes to download to his machine and choose the “Download” option. Google Drive will then start downloading the files in ZIP format from which it can extract the files at the end of the process.
