Instagram’s Stories feature was largely inspired by Snapchat’s own Stories feature, but it has since taken on a life of its own. For those who are not familiar, Stories is a fun way to share short video clips or pictures that will disappear after 24 hours. This is useful if you have some sort of theme in your Instagram profile that you’d rather not mess with unrelated posts.

The downside to Stories is that it has a limit in terms of the maximum number of seconds per story, which means that if you wanted to share a video that’s longer than 15 seconds, you might be unlucky. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t impossible, and with this guide, we’ll show you how to post longer videos to your Instagram Stories.

Method 1 – Use Instagram to Automatically Trim Your Videos

When you upload a video longer than 15 seconds in your stories, if it’s short enough, Instagram will actually cut that video for you. For example, if you have a video that is 60 seconds long, uploading it to Stories will automatically cut it into four 15 second segments.

Unfortunately, there is a 1 minute limit, which means the maximum number of times Instagram will splice the videos for you is into four 15-second segments. If you have videos that are less than 60 seconds this shouldn’t be a problem, but if you have videos that are longer than 60 seconds you will want to move on to the other methods listed below to see which one works best for you. .

Method 2 – Manually trim your videos

If the above method doesn’t work for you, you’ll need to manually cut your videos into 15-second segments or 60-second segments and let Instagram do the rest. By default, your smartphone will come with basic video editing tools that will allow you to trim and trim the video to the length you want.

ios

  1. Launch the Photos app
  2. Select the video you want to trim and tap Edit in the top right corner
  3. Drag the slider left or right to increase or decrease the duration
  4. Tap Done

Android

  1. Launch the Gallery app
  2. Select the video you want to trim and tap the scissors icon
  3. Press Trim
  4. Drag the slider left or right to increase or decrease the duration
  5. Tap the check mark icon when you’re done

The problem with manually trimming your videos is that your selection of the start and end of each segment might not be as precise as you would like, but in a pinch it should be enough to get the job done.

Method 3 – Using a third-party application

If you want a faster and easier way to trim your videos for uploading to Instagram Stories, you might need to turn to a third-party app. There are several apps to choose from, and we’ve listed them below where you can download them for iOS or Android.

Note: All apps are free, but some come with watermarks and ads that you can choose to pay a small fee to remove them. You don’t have to, but if you want to remove these limitations, you will have to pay for them.
