The Xbox Series X and S can both be used offline, but they’re not really designed for it. When an Xbox Series X or S doesn’t connect to Xbox Live, you lose access to your friends list, can’t play multiplayer games, can’t download new games and updates, can’t cannot access Game Pass and cannot use streaming apps like Netflix or Spotify.

What are the causes of Xbox Series X or S connection errors?

When you’re having trouble signing in to your Xbox Series X or S, it’s usually due to an issue with Xbox Live, internet connectivity issues, or your sign-in credentials. When your Xbox can’t connect to the internet, it also can’t connect to Xbox Live, so it won’t be able to connect. The same is true if the Xbox Live service itself is down, and entering the wrong password or username when signing in can have the same basic result.

If you can log in, but can’t play a specific game online, check to see if the game’s servers are down. Try the developer’s or publisher’s official Twitter account, and search social media for posts about this game being down.

Since this issue is usually caused by a connectivity issue, service outage, or credential issue, you will need to check each of them in turn to get back online. Follow these steps in order to get your Xbox Series X or S connected and online again:

  1. Check your internet. If your other devices can connect to the internet, then that’s probably not the problem. If other devices are having trouble connecting, correct your internet connection and check if your Xbox Series X or S is able to connect and connect.
  2. Check the status of Xbox Live. Your Xbox Series X or S must be able to connect to this service to access online features, whether or not you are an Xbox Live or Game Pass Ultimate subscriber. If xbox live is down, you will just have to wait for Microsoft to fix the problem and try again later.
  3. Make sure you are using the correct login information. You use the same combination of emails and passwords to sign in to your Xbox as you do to sign in to sites like Microsoft.com, Live.com, and Outlook.com. Visit account.live.com try to sign in using the same email and password you put in your Xbox Series X or S, and see if that works. If not, then you or someone else has changed your password, and you will need to use the new password to log in. Since a variety of Microsoft services all use the same login details, changing your password on one of them will change it for all of them. Have you recently changed your Skype password, for example? If so, you will need to use the new password to sign in to your Xbox.
  4. Check your Internet connection on your Xbox Series X or S. If you’re connected by Wi-Fi, you may just have connectivity issues. In this case, moving the console, your wireless router, or just connecting your console to the router with an Ethernet cable may solve the problem. To check your internet connection on Xbox Series X | S:
    1. Press on the Xbox button to open the Guide.
    2. Navigate to profile & system > Settings.
    3. Navigate to settings general> network.
    4. Select Test network connection.
  5. Log in using your controller. If your profile is not currently assigned to the controller you are using, this may allow you to sign in. To assign your profile to your current controller:
    1. Press on the Xbox button to open the Guide.
    2. Navigate to profile & system > Settings.
    3. Navigate towards the account> Login, security and passkey.
    4. Select This controller is youinsind, and choose your profile. This will only work if your email address and password are entered correctly, so be sure to perform this step before trying this fix.
  6. Restart your Xbox Series X or S console. Your Xbox Series X or S may have a momentary problem that can be corrected by restarting your console. If your console normally goes into a low power state instead of shutting down, it’s especially important to make sure that the console actually reboots. Here’s how to restart an Xbox Series X or S:
    1. Press on the Xbox button on your controller to open the Guide.
    2. Navigate to profile & system > Power.
    3. Select Console restart.
  7. Power cycle your Xbox Series X or S console. If simply restarting did not resolve the problem, a power cycle may. This is a bit more involved process, but it will not delete any data from your console.
    1. Shut down your Xbox Series X or S.
    2. Unplug the console from the power.
    3. Wait five minutes, then plug it in.
    4. Turn on the console and see if you can connect.

If you have verified that you are using the correct username and password combination, that your internet connection is strong, and that xbox live and other Microsoft services are not down, but you still cannot get online you may have a hardware problem.
