How to fix problems on MacOs Big Sur?

On November 12, the update MacOs Big Sur was available for Macs and MacBook. Coinciding with the launch of the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac mini which each use Apple’s M1 chip, the latter come with this new operating system previously installed.

The story could have ended there, but unfortunately it is not. Some users have indeed had the very unpleasant surprise of seeing their machine become totally unusable while trying to install the new OS. These include some old MacBook Pro Circa 2013 and 2014.

Before considering any problem correction, it is first of all important to verify that your old Mac or MacBook is compatible with the Big Sur update. Apple no longer supports some older Mac models that run MacOs Catalina, here is the full list of compatible devices:

  • MacBook (2015 or later)
  • MacBook Air (2013 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (2013 or later, beware, some devices do not support the update as seen above)
  • Mac Pro (2013 or later)
  • Mac Mini (2014 or later)
  • iMac (2014 or later)
  • iMac Pro (2017 or later).

While the installation itself is not problematic, as with any major update to an operating system, problems can occur. Here we will come back to the most common problems that users have seen with MacOs 11.

Download does not work

If your computer uses the security chip T2 (to check this information go to the Apple menu> About this Mac> System Report> Controller), you will probably have to reset SMC by shutting down the MacBook> keeping the cable, hold Shift + Ctrl + Option for 7 seconds> Keep them keys and keep the power button pressed for another 7 seconds> Restart the machine.

If your desktop Mac has the T2 chip, shut it down> remove the power cord, wait 15 seconds and plug it back in> Wait 15 seconds> Restart.

Applications do not launch or are too slow at startup

Many users have noticed, after updating MacOs Big Sur, slowdowns of applications (non-Apple) but also sometimes the inability to open them.

This problem which was caused by the overwhelmed Apple servers has apparently been resolved. If you still find yourself experiencing slowdown issues, check your login items or your system clutter.

Connection problems since installing the Big Sur update

If you notice connection problems on your Mac or MacBook since downloading the MacOs 11 update, restart it by holding down the Command + S keys on the keyboard during the restart phase. On the command prompt that will boot, enter this:

/ sbin / mount -uw / and press Enter. Then enter this: rm /var/db/.applesetupdone and press enter then restart.

The mouse has stopped working after installing the update

If you encounter this issue, open the ~ / Library / Preferences / directory in Finder> Select and delete the following files:

  • apple.AppleMultitouchMouse.plist
  • apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.mouse.plist

Restart your machine to make your mouse work again.

Problems with Bluetooth

This issue became common on Apple computers after installing the update. To solve it, press Shift + Option> Click on the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar> Select Reset Bluetooth module> Ok> Restart your machine.

The menu bar has disappeared

This can happen but fortunately it is very easy to correct: go to System Preferences> Users & Groups> Connection options> enter your Admin password> deactivate the option “Show the quick user change menu” > the menu bar is back> go back to System Preferences and select Dock & Menu Bar> Turn off fast user switching.
