Spotify firewall blocking error on my Mac.

Have you ever come across this weird error while running Spotify on your Mac? You opened the Spotify app and tried to sign in, but it was prompted with a message like this:

“A firewall may be blocking Spotify. Please update your firewall to allow Spotify. Also, you can try to change the proxy settings currently in use (error code: 17) “

Honestly I have no idea what this Spotify error is – update firewall? proxy settings? What do these technological jargons really mean?

I was completely lost… but fortunately the problem is not difficult to solve. All you have to do is change the country settings and the error code will go away.

I have yet to find a reliable source on the real cause, but my hunch is: either you are using a different network with a foreign IP address, or you are traveling outside of your country.

Because Spotify has different parameters and pricing structures in different countries. For example, Spotify Premium is not available in many countries outside of the US and UK. Efforts that I tried but didn’t work

First, I clicked on the Proxy Settings link and followed a tip I found online that setting it to “No Proxy” would help, but it doesn’t.

I also uninstalled and reinstalled Spotify from scratch, because the official Spotify website has this guide saying:

The solution: change the country in the context

It took me a while to figure it out, and IT WORKS. Here’s how to do it step by step.

Step 1: Log in to Spotify. Click on this link https://accounts.spotify.com/en/login and enter your Spotify username and password.

2nd step: Click on “Account” under “Profile”.

Step 3: In the “Account overview” tab, click on the black button “MODIFY PROFILE”.

Step 4: Change the country to another where you are currently.

Step 5: Click on the green “SAVE PROFILE” to save your changes.

Step 6: Now quit your Spotify app and relaunch it on your Mac. Boom, that should work now.
