If you don’t want to spend the money on an Amazon Echo Show or Echo Spot, Amazon gives you a much more affordable alternative: a Fire tablet with Show mode.

Keep in mind that only 8 or 10 inch Fire tablets will work with Show mode. If you have a 7 inch model, you are out of luck. There are several ways to turn on View Mode, and it’s not entirely obvious when you boot up the Fire tablet and use it day to day.

So how do you activate it? Lucky for you, we’ve got you covered with this handy guide to the three ways you can turn on View mode.

Get the charging station in Show mode

If you’re getting the Fire tablet primarily for Show Mode, you should really consider getting the Charging Dock in Show Mode.

You can do without it, but you’ll have to find a way to support the Fire tablet while keeping it charged to use it properly. It’s easier said than done. We were able to put it on our shelf, but we couldn’t load it at the same time.

If you opt for the charging station in Show mode, activating Show mode is absurdly simple. You just start to load it. The charging station consists of two parts. There’s the actual docking station, which plugs into the wall, and then there’s a sleeve that you plug the Fire tablet into.

This Fire tablet has wireless charging points on the back that will connect to similar points on the actual docking station, charging the Fire tablet and automatically activating Show mode. If you’ve ever seen a Microsoft Surface or an iPad Pro and how they connect to their keyboards, it’s a similar idea.

Swipe down on the notification panel

The Fire tablet doesn’t look like Android, but it uses Amazon’s own forked version of the popular operating system. This means that some things are still going to be familiar, like Android’s notification pane.

Amazon went and slipped a toggle for View directly in the pane. All you have to do is slide your finger from the top to the bottom to show the pane, then press the button. Show mode to toggle. Once you do this, View mode will be activated.

To turn off Show mode, you will need to do the same. Just swipe down from the top of the screen in View mode, tap the toggle, and you’re back in Amazon’s tablet plus interface.

Ask Alexa

Ah yes, how could we forget the famous digital assistant from Amazon. Surely that could help us a bit and enable us, right? Right. All you have to do is ask.

To turn on View mode, just say: “Alexa, turn on View mode.” To turn off View mode, say: “Alexa, turn off Show mode.” Boom, you’re done.
