Play Enlisted for a while but can’t seem to keep your team alive? Well you’ve come to the right place, because today I’m going to show you how to use AI in Enlisted in the most efficient way possible.

As we all know, AI in Enlisted isn’t the brightest and requires a lot of tutoring, which is why this step by step guide will help you keep them alive long enough for you to use!

Enlisted AI squads

Unlike other games in the genre, where you usually only have to worry about your character, in Enlisted you actually have a whole team under your command and it’s your job to make sure they survive and thrive.

Now your squad members have some basic instincts like crouching down and taking cover so you don’t get killed right away. However, sometimes they go out on their own, doing things they shouldn’t be doing, which eliminates your team’s position. When you are in the middle of a battle, it is not very good.

Command your squad

There are a few actions you can take to keep your AI from going rogue in the middle of a match.

To get started, there are some basic commands you can give to members of your AI squad:

  • Hold a position
  • Hold a goal
  • To build
  • Disassemble
  • Revive your character
  • Heal your character
  • Attack the enemy
  • Get into a vehicle

Hold a position

This is the most common command you can give your AI, and I tend to use it in two specific ways. First of all, you can use it defensively: choosing a well-protected house will lower the windows and allow your troops to occupy that position. They might not be the smartest AI out there, but they know how to crouch and hide effectively, and that way they can get a decent number of kills before they get killed themselves.

The other way is to bring your AI closer to your next objective and keep it well hidden while you fight solo. That way when your character dies, you’ll always be close to the action. How to do it? Well, the best way is to lock them up in the attics. AI squad members don’t know how to climb ladders and locks. It would usually be a bad thing if you wanted them to follow you, but in this specific case where you want them to stay in a safe area, it’s very useful.

All you have to do is find a house with an attic and place them all in the attic. Now, as I mentioned, they cannot go out on their own, so you will have to switch places with your members and do it individually.

Many players don’t know this, but it’s possible to switch between team members without the character you’re using dying. All you have to do is press the Y button on your PC. Once you’ve got everyone in the attic, just pick the team member you want and go into battle.

Hold a goal

When you reach an objective, your AI squad will automatically move away from the objective and focus on attempting to kill nearby enemies. However, if that’s not what you want them to do, press the X button and they’ll move towards the goal and unfold, covering multiple entrances.

Construction and dismantling

Very good! This is a feature not many gamers are familiar with and for good reason, as the game doesn’t teach you anything about it in the tutorial.

So you have a team and you have a few engineers, but you never really figured out what to do with them. Well, wonder no more! All you have to do is write a blueprint, then order the engineers on your team to build the device or structure. We’re talking barbed wire, heavy machinery, ammo boxes, sandbag walls and more.

However, the AI isn’t the smartest and might get distracted from its task, which means you’ll end up having to trade in for an engineer and build the structure yourself.

As for dismantling, all you have to do is get closer to the structure you want to dismantle and order your AI to dismantle. Then again, you might end up doing this yourself, as your AI can often give up its task if an enemy shoots their weapon.

Revive and heal your character

This is one of the best uses for your AI – it heals you very quickly. You can simply load a bunch of Med Kits into their inventory before the match starts, and you’ll have your own medic on duty. The same strategy applies to healing in general.

Attack the enemy

Telling your squad to attack the enemy is usually not necessary since it is already programmed to do so. However, you might be tempted to tell them to attack the armored tanks. That’s a big no for your AI team.

The second you tell your squad to hit a tank, Enlisted will tell you right away that this is not possible, so there really is no reason for you to put your AI in the crosshairs. Instead, switch to your bomber and destroy this bad boy yourself.

Getting into a vehicle

There’s no tricks to learn here, as the AI is already used to getting into vehicles when you do. However, they jump as soon as you do, which means they’ll turn into sitting ducks.

To prevent this from happening, press that X button and order them to stay inside the vehicle. This way, if you are downed, you can move on to another member of the team, without being immediately endangered.

Bonus tips

Anytime you want to use your AI in combat by Enlisted, you will need to use your X button and V button often, V button marks the enemy and your squad will usually look in that direction and shoot; other times, they just look at the walls and admire the dirt. Yes, AI is not very smart right now.

It is also a good idea to use the radio as often as possible, to give your squad different combat formations. You will find the radio on the Alt key by default, and you will be able to see the different formations.

When to use the radio? Well, let’s say you get into an open terrain scenario, keeping your troops in line would just make them easy targets. That’s when you pick up the radio and tell your troops to keep away from each other. This way, it is more difficult for the enemy to annihilate you. On the other hand, when moving from trench to trench, it’s best to keep your AI close.

And that’s all! I admit it took me a while to figure this out, and most of my knowledge was acquired through trial and error – a lot of unnecessary AI deaths. In the end, I think I got it right, and I hope this will work for you too.

Hopefully the AI will be improved over the next few fixes and updates, but until then feel free to use these tips and stay tuned for more. Enlisted content!
