Connect to your Wi-Fi from your Google Home mobile device

The Google Home line offers an assortment of interactive products controlled by Google Assistant. This voice service responds to a variety of commands. To get a Google Home device to listen to these commands, you’ll need to connect it to a Wi-Fi network. Here’s how to connect your Google Home smart device to your Wi-Fi network.

Before you connect a Google Home device to your wireless network, make sure you have the wireless network name and password ready.

Connect Google Home to Wi-Fi for the first time

To connect your Google Home device to your existing Wi-Fi network, you’ll need the Google Home app to ios or Android. Download the app before starting this process.

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Select or enter the google account that you want to pair with the Google Home device.
  3. If requested, activate Bluetooth on the iOS or Android device.
  4. The app should discover the Google Home device. Press then.
  5. The speaker should make a sound. If you hear this sound, select Yes.
  6. Sure Where is screen this device, select the location of your device (for example, Living room).
  7. Enter a unique name for the Google Home speaker.
  8. From the list of available Wi-Fi networks, choose the network you want to connect the Google Home device to, and then tap next.
  9. Enter the Wi-Fi network password and press Connect.
  10. A successful connection message appears after a short delay.

Connect Google Home to a new Wi-Fi network

If your Google Home speaker was set up but now needs to be connected to a different Wi-Fi network or to an existing network with a changed password, take the following steps.

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Press on the device button, which is located in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. You’ll see a list of your Google Home devices, each with its user-specified name and picture. Locate the device you want to connect to Wi-Fi and tap its Menu button (the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner of the speaker card).
  4. When the pop-up menu appears, select Settings.
  5. Scroll down to the section parameters device and press on Wi-Fi.
  6. You will see the Wi-Fi settings for the Google Home device. If the Google Home is currently connected to a network, select Forget this network.
  7. Choose Forget Wi-Fi Network to confirm.
  8. On the app’s home screen, tap the device button again.
  9. Select Add a new device.
  10. You are prompted to go to the Wi-Fi settings of the iOS or Android device and connect to the custom Google Home hotspot from the network list. This hotspot is represented by a name followed by four digits, or by the custom name you previously gave to your Google Home device during setup.
  11. Return to the Google Home app. The speaker should make a sound. If you heard this sound, select Yes.
  12. In Where is screen this device, select the location of your device (for example, Living room).
  13. Enter a unique name for the Google Home speaker.
  14. From the list of available Wi-Fi networks, choose the network you want to connect Google Home to. Then press on Next.
  15. Enter the password for the Wi-Fi network, then press on Connect.
  16. A successful connection message appears after a short delay.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you’ve followed these instructions carefully and can’t connect your Google Home device to your Wi-Fi network, try these simple troubleshooting steps:

  • Restart the modem and the router.
  • Reset the Google Home to factory settings. Press and hold the microphone button, typically found on the bottom of the device, for about 15 seconds.
  • Confirm you have the correct Wi-Fi password. Connect another device using the same password to make sure it is correct.
  • Update the firmware on the modem and router.
  • Move the Google Home speaker closer to the wireless router.
  • Move the Google Home speaker away from possible sources of signal interference, such as baby monitors or other wireless electronic devices.
