In Windows 10, changing your default browser is easy. In Windows 11, you need to make a few more changes in the settings. Here’s how to do it.
Microsoft has not been shy about promoting the use of its Edge browser in Windows 11. By default, Edge will open whenever you click on a web link or open an HTML file. Fortunately, you can change this in the settings, although Microsoft is making the process unobvious and more difficult than expected.
How to change the default browser on Windows 11
To get started, open the Settings app. You can do this quickly by pressing Windows + i on your keyboard. Or you can open Start, search for “Settings” and click on the Settings app icon.
In Settings, click “Apps” in the sidebar, then select “Default apps” from the list.
In the search box under “Set defaults for apps,” enter the name of the browser you want to use as the default browser in Windows 11 (for example, “Firefox” or “Chrome.”) Then click on its name in the results below.
On the browser’s “Default Applications” settings page, you will see a list of file extensions (such as .HTM, .HTML, and .SHTML) that can potentially be associated with the browser. To change your default browser in Windows 11, you will need to click on each of these file types and select the browser you want. To start, click on the application area just below “.HTM”.
You will see a pop-up window that will ask you how you would like to open files of that type from now on. Select the browser you want to use from the list, then click “OK”.
When you click on the first type of file, you will see a pop-up warning from Microsoft asking you to reconsider quitting Microsoft’s Edge browser. Click on “Change anyway”.
After changing the association with .HTM, repeat the above steps with .HTML, .SHTML, .XHT, .XHTML, HTTP and HTTPS. Click on each entry, then set the association to the browser of your choice. When you’re done, you’ll have a list of default apps full of associations with the browser you want to use.
The next time you double-click an HTML file or come across a web link, Windows will launch the browser you selected.
