Change and use DuckDuckGo, the private search engine it is really very simple. The search engine has been online since 2088 and is gradually gaining popularity. Finding websites, maps, videos, news and more, while keeping our privacy to the fullest and without targeted ads, is a daily thing at DuckDuckGo.

DuckDuckGo is already included in most browsers

Considering the fact that over the past decade the search engine has gained more and more ground. It is normal that little by little it is implemented in different browsers as a search option.

In September 2014, Apple started using DuckDuckGo as the default search engine for Safari iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. The same year, Mozilla did the same in Firefox 33.1.

Since then, most popular browsers now include it as an optional search engine. From Chrome, via Firefox and Safari, to Edge and Opera.

Use DuckDuckGo by default in Google Chrome

We start Chrome and we will click on the three dots that appear in the upper right corner of the screen. A menu with various options is displayed. We will need to click where it says “Settings”.

In the left sidebar, we will click on the “Search” section. At the top we will see an option that says “Search engine used in address bar”. On your right we can click and a menu with the available search engines will appear. We’re just going to choose DuckDuckGo.

We will first open Firefox, once opened we will need to click on the three lines that appear in the upper right corner of the browser. A new menu will appear where we will have to select “Preferences”.

We click on the “Search” tab and from the drop-down menu we can choose DuckDuckGo as our default search engine.

Switch to DuckDuckGo from Opera

Configure another default search engine in Opera.

In opera, it’s quite simple. We open Opera, then we will have to click on the “Cog” button in Settings which is on the left sidebar of the screen. Here we will see the “Basic” configuration, we will go down until we see “Search Engine” and in the drop down list we will have to select DuckDuckGo.

In case switching to DuckDuckGo as the default browser is not enough. Then we can also install the extension called DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials which is available for Chrome, Edge, Opera, Safari and Firefox.

The extension takes care of blocking the tracking networks by default. This way, companies that are in charge of saving all of our browsing information will find it much more complicated. The extension forces websites to use an encrypted connection to try and hide as much information as possible.

It also gives us the option to add DuckDuckGo as our default search engine (if you haven’t already) and gives us a privacy score for the websites we visit.
