Lossless audio is available for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Music. Apple recently introduced the implementation of the Advanced Audio Codec (AAC), which provides sound that is virtually indistinguishable from the original studio recording. All songs in the service’s catalog are now encoded using lossless audio compression at no additional cost. How to activate it?

It’s official, lossless audio (lossless audio in English) is available on Apple Music, Apple’s streaming service. The Cupertino company now offers all the songs in its catalog encoded using lossless audio compression, at no additional cost.

Indeed, Apple has developed its own lossless audio compression technology, called ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec). In addition to the AAC format, the entire Apple Music catalog is now also encoded in the ALAC format, with resolutions ranging from 16 bit / 44.1 kHz (CD quality) to 24 bit / 192 kHz. But how to enable lossless audio in Apple Music on your iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV ? As a reminder, this feature is not compatible with AirPods and HomePod.

However, note that some content is not available with lossless audio. This is the case for radio stations, live radio and on-demand content from Apple Music, Apple Music Hits and Apple Music Country as well as music videos.

How to enable lossless audio on iPhone and iPad

You can listen to lossless audio content on iPhone or iPad updated to iOS or iPadOS 14.6. You will also need the following:

  • Wired connection to headphones, receivers or powered speakers
  • Integrated speakers
  • External digital-to-analog converter, for songs with a sample rate above 48 kHz

For enable lossless audio on iPhone and iPad, then do the following:

  1. Go to Settings > Music.
  2. Touch Audio quality.
  3. Touch Lossless to activate or deactivate this setting. You can then choose the audio quality for streaming and downloading your audio content.

How to enable lossless audio on Mac

You will need macOS 11.4 at least. To enable lossless audio on Mac, follow the guide:

  1. Open the Apple Music app.
  2. Sign in to your Apple account (this step is obligatory to bring up the lossless audio submenu).
  3. In the menu bar, choose Music > Preferences.
  4. Click on the tab Reading.

  • Under Audio quality, select or deselect the setting Lossless Audio to activate or deactivate it. Ditto for Dolby Atmos, by default on automatic. You can also change streaming and lossless download settings.
    • “Lossless” for a maximum resolution of 24 bits / 48 kHz
    • “High quality lossless” for a maximum resolution of 24 bits / 192 kHz

How to enable lossless audio on Apple TV

You will need an Apple TV 4K up to date with tvOS 14.6. Connect your Apple TV 4K to an AV receiver using an HDMI cable. Then follow the following:

  1. Go to Settings> Apps.
  2. Select Music.
  3. Select Audio quality.

  1. Select or deselect Without loss as well as Dolby Atmos or not.
  2. Please note that Apple TV 4K does not currently support high quality Lossless technology (sampling frequencies above 48 kHz).
