Before we begin, it should be noted that this tutorial is intended for residents of the United Kingdom. The BBC is an English public service and it is illegal to view its content without paying the TV license. As the iPlayer platform is not intended to be used from abroad, it is at the reader’s discretion whether or not to follow this tutorial.
To learn more about streaming, we recommend our article Is streaming legal in France?
We have also made a selection of the best series available on: Netflix, Amazon and Canal +. Finally, if you hesitate between Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, you can consult our comparison of the two services.
Watch BBC Using VPN
The BBC’s iPlayer platform determines your location using the public IP address you are using. In other words, it knows which country you are in thanks to your internet connection. The easiest way to get around this limitation is to use a VPN.
A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is a system that allows you to send or receive data over a private connection, while using an internet network.
Since VPNs can hide the location of a computer, many individuals use them to visit sites that would otherwise not be accessible from their country.
So, to watch the BBC in France, all you need to do is use one of these software, locate your computer in England and then log into your user account on iPlayer.
Change its DNS settings for access via your Xbox or Playstation
If you want to watch English TV through your Xbox or PlayStation internet browser, you need to change the DNS (Domain Name Servers) settings.
Go to your console’s network settings and manually configure your primary and secondary DNS.
You can find DNS addresses very easily on the internet. For example, DroidKid offers a whole list. Be careful, these are very popular and their connections are sometimes slow. They also sometimes link to advertising sites.
BBC iPlayer and TV license fee
Creating an account is easy and free. Note, however, that you need an English postcode to complete your registration.
If you live in England and have paid your license fee, these changes will not impact you and you will still be able to use a VPN while traveling abroad.
