With the iOS 15 update of September 2021, a lot of new features and improvements have been made to iPhones.

If you haven’t installed it yet, then follow this tutorial.

Please note, once the update has been carried out, it is not possible to reverse.

What is the iOS update?

iOS is the operating system that runs on iPhones. It organizes, launches, runs applications and features.

Every year at WWDC, Apple reveals the latest updates and what they bring, before they officially launch from the September Keynote, as it did with iOS 15 now available.

During the year, interim updates will be available for download. When you do this, the most recent version will be installed automatically.

Make sure your iPhone is up to date

Before downloading the latest iOS version, make sure your device is compatible. The iOS 15 version, for example, is accessible from iPhone 6s.

Prepare for the iOS update

Before switching to the new system on your iPhone and avoid all disappointments, follow our 4 tips below:

Back up your data

First of all, we advise you to back up your data, and to do this, use iCloud or Finder for example.

This way, in case of mishandling or bug, you will not lose your messages or photos.

This backup includes purchased music, TV shows, apps and books, your photos, videos, and all of your settings.

Backing up synchronized content from your computer is done with Finder, or iTunes depending on the age of your machine, so it’s best to back up to your Mac or iCloud.

After which, you will have a few simple steps to take to make sure your update goes smoothly.

Free up space on your iPhone

It is important that you have enough storage space, otherwise you will not be able to perform such an update.

We can only advise you to delete all files that are no longer or have no use.

Plug in your iPhone

It is essential that your iPhone is plugged into the mains or to a computer, as it would be damaging to run out of battery during the update.

Stay connected to Wi-Fi

Choose a Wi-Fi connection rather than 3G or 4G, otherwise you will find yourself without data long before the end of the month!

Install an iOS update

The update is very easy to perform although it can take several long minutes.

To do this, first go to SettingsGeneralSoftware update.

iOS lists all the updates that have not been performed, you will then be informed that a new iOS version is available for download and the storage space required to install it.

The link Find out more, allows you to understand the changes and improvements that will be made.

Now press To install, enter your authentication code, then accept the terms of use to start the download which will take place in the background.

Once the latter is complete, you will receive a notification that the update is ready to be installed.

Know that you can make this update whenever you want, as soon as it is ready or later in the day for example.

To remind you that it is available, a red icon will be displayed next to Software Update.

The vagaries of updates

A software update is usually without a hitch, but it can happen that there are small malfunctions.

The update drags on

In 2013, the update to iOS 7 took a particularly long time, and unfortunately it was the same in 2014 with iOS 8 …

This is due to the simultaneous connection of a colossal number of users to Apple’s servers, so they end up saturating.

If you decide to update your device as soon as the new version is released, it goes without saying that it will take a long time.

Our advice would be to wait a few days before updating your iPhone, or iPad. In this way, it will be done more quickly and this will prevent you from the first small bugs of the new version.

Insufficient space on your device

As mentioned above, it is best to free up some space on your iPhone, or iPad, before updating it.

You can delete your biggest files, the transfer to your pc or save them on a Cloud, and reinstall them after your update.

Update iOS overnight

Apple offers its users the possibility of installing the new version of iOS overnight, when you are not using your iPhone.

To do this, when you are prompted to perform the update, you can postpone it, by selecting Remind me later.

Remember that your iPhone must be plugged into the mains so as not to run out of battery.

If you still opt for a nightly update, prefer weekends and avoid doing it during the change from summer time to winter time.

IOS beta versions

Before a major iOS update is released to the public, there are what are known as public beta releases. These are test updates to correct the bugs found

If you want to help Apple, you can join the beta program before Apple’s Keynote.
