Here’s how to recognize your iPhone model

IPhones follow and resemble each other (even the most recent) so much so that even the most knowledgeable users find it difficult to identify them.

In this tutorial, we give you 3 techniques to help you recognize the model of iPhone you own.

You will find its version thanks to the model number written on its back, its identifier indicated in the parameters or an element of its design.

Identify your iPhone by its model number

The best way to identify an iPhone is by referring to its model number. It appears on the back of the device and is preceded by the letter A.

Once the number is found, refer to the list given below to determine which model you have.

Note that the same iPhone can have different number. Indeed, the latter is also used to know if it is compatible or not with certain networks and frequency bands.

Identify your iPhone using the reference number

The part number of your iPhone gives more details about the model you have, including its color and storage capacity. You will find it in the settings of your smartphone.

To access it, go to SettingsGeneralInformation.

Next to the Model No. option, you will find an alphanumeric code starting with the letter M or N.

The design of your iPhone

If, for whatever reason, you can’t find a number, know that you can identify your iPhone by its design.

You can compare their screen size, their curved or square edge, the presence of a home button or not, or the number of photo lenses.

iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS

The back of these iPhones is curved and it is made of plastic.

The rear shell of the 3GS is brighter than the 3G. It is also available in white.

These two models look a lot like the iPhone 5c.

iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S

TheiPhone 4 and theiPhone 4s both have front and back glass, their outline is stainless steel. They have a white and black version.

If we focus only on design, it is difficult to distinguish them. Their main differences are therefore technical. For example, the iPhone 4S marks the arrival of the voice assistant Siri.

The iPhone 4 has 8, 16, or 32 GB of storage space, while the 4S also has a 64 GB version.

To check the capacity of your iPhone, go to SettingsGeneralInformation. If it is more than 32 GB, then it is the 4S model.

iPhone 5

TheiPhone 5 is very similar to the previous two iPhones, except that it is a bit larger (4 inches). This size allows it to display 6 rows of application icons in addition to the Dock, compared to 5 for the iPhone 4s and previous models.

iPhone 5s

TheiPhone 5s looks identical to 5, but it differs thanks to the integration of the Touch ID sensor.

The Home button is a circle and no longer a square.

Also, the iPhone 5s is available in Gold, Silver and Space Gray, while the 5 is only available in Black or White.

iPhone 5c

The hull of theiPhone 5c is curved and made of plastic.

This model is sold in much brighter colors (white, pink, yellow, green and blue).

It is also taller than the 5s, and its shape is more square than the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s

The design of the 6th generation iPhone (Iphone 6 and 6s) has been completely redesigned. Its edges are curved and their screen is larger (4.7 inches).

The Sleep / Wake button is placed on the right side.

IPhone 6s is available in Rose Gold, Silver, Gold, and Space Gray. You can’t go wrong as you will see the letter S engraved on the back.

iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6s Plus

Apple enlarged iPhone screens 6 More and 6s More, which are 5.5 inches (diagonal). There’s room for six rows of icons, and that’s not including the Dock.

The 6s is offered in Rose Gold and has an S inscribed on the back.

iPhone SE

TheiPhone SE has the colors of the iPhone 6 and 6s and the design of the iPhone 5s.

It is made of glass and aluminum. Its Sleep / Wake button is on the top of the device.

To distinguish an SE from a 5s, just turn it over, you will see SE engraved on the back.

iPhone 7

The screen of theiPhone 7 is 4.7 inches (diagonal). It looks like the iPhone 6 but it’s thinner. In addition, the horizontal line at the bottom and top of the back has been removed on this model.

A detail that is very important is that its lens sticks out slightly from the shell.

The iPhone is available in 6 colors (Rose Gold, Gold, Silver, Black, Jet Black), and it is the 1st iPhone to have a red version.

iPhone 7 Plus

TheiPhone 7 Plus is unsurprisingly similar to the iPhone 7, but larger (5.5 inches). Its On button is placed to the right of the device.

Its front is made of glass, the back of metal. Its camera sticks out slightly from the shell and it has 2 lenses.

The iPhone 7 Plus is in the same colors as its predecessor.

iPhone 8

TheiPhone 8 is the same size as the iPhone 7. The screen and the back of this Apple smartphone are made of very resistant glass. Its frame is made of aluminum and its edges are curved.

It has a memory of 64 GB or 256 GB.iPhone 8 is sold in the colors Gold, Silver, Space Gray or Red.

iPhone 8 Plus

TheiPhone 8 Plus has a screen larger than the 8 (5.5 inches diagonally). The rest of its design, including colors, remains unchanged.

Its back is not aluminum, but glass, and its storage options are 64 GB or 256 GB, against 32 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB for the 7 Plus.

The major difference is surely its dual rear wide-angle camera with 12 Mpx telephoto lens.

This model is available in the colors silver, space gray, gold and red edition.

iPhone X

TheiPhone X was released in October 2017 to celebrate the 10 years of the American brand. This smartphone stands out first of all by its price (€ 1,159 for 64 GB of storage and € 1,329 for 256 GB).

Other notable differences are an integrated 5.8-inch Super Retina display in the curved design and the removal of the Home button and fingerprint reader to make way for Face ID. It has two lenses on the back, arranged vertically.

The iPhone X is only sold in two colors, Space Gray or Silver. To see it in other colors, and at the same time strengthen its protection, you can add a shell.

iPhone XS

IPhone XS has no noticeable physical difference with the iPhone X, this is only its weight, 177 g, against 174 g.

Like its predecessor, it has the same notch, a 5.8-inch OLED Super Retina screen and a dual photo sensor on the back.

To distinguish them, we must then look at their finish and their technical characteristics.

The XS is available in three colors: Gold, Space Gray and Silver. It has an additional memory capacity of 512 GB, an IP68 protection rating and incorporates an A12 Bionic chip.

iPhone XS Max

IPhone XS Max is a larger version of the iPhone XS with a 6.5 inch screen, and it weighs heavier (208g).

Its Super Retina OLED display has a body-to-screen ratio of 84.4% while that of the XS is 82.9%.

These two models still have some identical points, they offer three memory capacity options (64 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB), three colors (Gold, space gray, silver) and a double photo sensor on the back, arranged vertically.

iPhone XR

IPhone XR differs quite easily from other iPhones. Its screen is a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina HD LCD, larger than the XS. It weighs 194g and it offers three memory capacity options, 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.

Apple only equipped it with a photo sensor placed on the back, and it is available in several colors (red, yellow, white, coral, black or blue), which reminds us of the iPhone 5c.

Finally, it is the cheapest of the 2018 range, it is sold at € 855.28, against € 1,155.28 for the XS, and € 1,225.28 for the XS Max.

IPhone 11

TheiPhone 11 sports a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina edge-to-edge display, which is surrounded by an anodized aluminum strip.

Its back has been made from glass, and it accommodates two 12MP cameras accompanied by a dual LED True Tone flash.

It is available in white, black, green, yellow, purple, and (PRODUCT) RED with storage capacities ranging from 64 GB to 256 GB.

IPhone 11 Pro

L‘iPhone 11 Pro presents a 5.8-inch screen, equipped with an OLED HDR Super Retina display.

At the rear, it is equipped with a triple 12 Mp lens. As for its selfie lens, it has a TrueDepth sensor compatible with 4K.

It is sold in four colors: silver, night green, space gray, gold. You will also have the choice between three storage capacities, 64 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB.

IPhone 11 Pro Max

On the display side, theiPhone 11 Pro Max presents a very bright 6.5-inch OLED HDR Super Retina screen, in particular thanks to True Tone technology.

At the back, it sports a triple square lens with wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto sensors. Overall, the iPhone 11 Pro Max has the same design as the 11 Pro, the only difference is in the screen size.

For this model, Apple offers the same colors and storage capacities as the 11 Pro.

iPhone SE (2020)

TheiPhone SE (2020) is the smallest smartphone in the Apple catalog, since it has a screen of only 4.7 inches. At the bottom of the latter, Apple has added a home button that embeds Touch ID technology.

As for its overall design, its edges are curved, its back is glass, and it comes in white, black, (PRODUCT) RED. On the back, it has a single 12MP wide-angle lens accompanied by a quadriLED True Tone flash.

This is the cheapest iPhone on the market, it has excellent value for money.
