Enable Automatic Registry Backup on Windows 11

The registry is a system database that stores all important Windows configuration settings. It’s a good idea to back up the registry once in a while, just in case system changes cause problems on your PC. In this case, you can then restore Windows with a good backup copy of the registry. You can manually select to back up the registry. However, it is best to enable regular automatic registry backups in Windows 11. Here are three ways to enable automatic registry backup in Windows 11.

How to enable automatic registry backup by editing the registry

Windows used to automatically back up the registry to a RegBack folder. However, Windows doesn’t do this anymore, perhaps because it was becoming increasingly useless with system restore points. You can re-enable these automatic RegBack backups by manually editing the registry as follows:

1. Select the search (magnifying glass) button from the Start menu on the taskbar.

2. Enter Registry Editor in the Type here to search box to locate this app.

3. Double-click the Registry Editor search result.

4. Then enter HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerConfiguration Manager in the address bar of Registry Editor and press Entrance.

5. Click the button Configuration Manager with the right mouse button to select New > DWORD (32-bit) value.

Click Configuration Manager

6. Then enter EnablePeriodicBackup as a new DWORD title.

7. Double click on the DWORD EnablePeriodicBackup to the right of Registry Editor.

8. Enter 1 in the data area to replace the current value.

Replace current value

9. Select okay to exit the Edit DWORD window.

Windows 11 will now automatically back up your registry to the RegBack folder. You may have to wait a few days for an automatic registry backup to occur (its exact timing is not entirely clear). Additionally, You can see the backup data in the folder WindowsSystem32configRegBack displayed directly below.

There you will see the default, SAM, security, software, and system hive files. This RegBack folder is usually 0 KB. When Windows automatically backed up the registry, the RegBack folder will include megabytes of data.

You can disable automatic backups by deleting the DWORD EnablePeriodBackup. open the key Configuration Manager in Registry Editor. From there, right-click on EnablePeriodBackup and select To delete and Yes.

How to Enable Automatic Registry Backup with Task Scheduler

Instead of editing the registry, you can schedule an automatic registry backup with Task Scheduler. The task scheduler has a RegIdleBackUp task that you can enable and schedule to backup the registry. Here’s how to schedule regular registry backups with the RegIdleBackUp task:

1. Open the Windows 11 search box and type in the task scheduler.

2. Click Task Scheduler to open its window.

3. Then double click on Task Scheduler Library to extend it.

4. Select Microsoft > Windows > Register to reach the RegIdleBack task shown directly below.

13. Make sure the box Enabled near the lower right corner of the window is selected.

14. Press the button okay to save the new trigger.

15. Then click again on okay in the Properties window of RegIdleBackup (local computer).

You have now configured the RegIdleBackup task to back up the registry once a week. You can also configure RegIdleBackup to backup the registry at login, startup, or other specified events by selecting other options from the drop-down menu start task. The registry will be backed up to the same RegBack folder specified for the previous method.

To delete a scheduled registry backup, delete its trigger for the RegIdleBackup task. You can do this by selecting the trigger in the tab Triggers from the RegIdleBackup Properties window. Then press the button Delete and click okay to close the window.

How to Enable Automatic Registry Backups with System Restore

The System Restore utility has been part of Windows since XP. This tool allows users to restore Windows to saved system image snapshots otherwise known as restore points. A restore point is another form of registry backup.

Users can select restore points in the System Restore window. However, System Restore will not automatically configure restore point backups unless this feature is enabled. Here’s how to enable restore point backups in Windows 11:

1. Press the keyboard key combination Win + R.

2. Type sysdm.cpl in Run and select okay to bring up a System Properties window.

3. Select the tab System protection in the screenshot below.

4. Click the button Configure in the tab System Protection.

You can view and select System Restore registry backups in this utility’s window. Click on the button Restoration system in the System Properties window. Then press the button Following to view available restore point backups. If there are many, you may be able to select an option Show more restore points to view a full list.

Select registry backups

To restore a registry backup from there, select a restore point date. Click on Following to proceed to the System Restore confirmation step. Select To end to restore Windows 11 to the chosen restore date.

Set automatic registry backups in Windows 11

It is recommended that users enable regular automatic registry backup in Windows 11 somehow. You probably won’t need to restore Windows Registry backups very often. However, these backups can be invaluable in fixing various PC issues. So make sure you have enabled regular automatic registry backups with one of the above methods.
