September 4, Google celebrated its 22 years of existence on the search engine market, and the least that we can, is that the Californian giant very quickly rose to the rank of world leader in search engines. It’s quite simple, with an average of 3.5 billion requests per day, it is the one that is used the most on the planet (except in China and Russia).
You are probably wondering how the company went about achieving such a rise. The story is long! But if we had to summarize it, here is a quick timeline that traces the main lines of the company:
- 1996: Sergey Brin and Larry Page, aged 22 and 23 at the time, stopped their studies one year after their meeting to develop a powerful search engine. They found their business that they will call BackRub before renaming it Google in 1997. For the little anecdote, the company should have been called Googol. It is an unfortunate misspelling that will have decided otherwise. To allow the organization of their search engine, our two friends are developing the web page algorithm that we still know under the name of PageRank.
- In 1998, the company, which began to grow, moved to Mountain View, California, near Silicon Valley.
- In 2000, Google, which already indexed more than a billion URLs negotiates a partnership with Yahoo and develops a targeted advertising network based on the keywords typed by users: Google adwords.
- 2003: the company revolutionizes electronic messaging by creating Gmail which displays an initial storage capacity of 1 GB.
- 2004: the company goes public and has more than 800 employees.
- 2005: launch of Google analytics and geolocated search with Google maps.
- 2006: Google acquires Youtube and spear Google Trends.
- 2008: launch of Google chrome and the new semi-automatic data entry feature. The search engine had more than trillion URLs referenced.
- 2009: launch of Google Translate available in over 50 languages
- 2010: first update of the algorithm (Caffeine) for faster processing of web pages.
- 2011: The search engine has one billion unique visitors per month. Second big update of the algorithm with Panda which will have a big impact on the SEO. A French branch is opened in Paris.
- 2012: 3.5 billion requests are typed every day and 4 new updates disrupt SEO. The company fueled its growth by buying that same year companies like Waze and Android.
- 2017: Google pays the modest sum of 3 billion dollars to the giant Apple to remain the default search engine for Apple brand devices.
- 2018: the company launches in France Google pay, mobile payment system accessible only to Android users.
These are obviously only the broad outlines of the history of this global giant.
90% of turnover of the company depending on the income generated by its AdWords advertising network, Google takes great care to retain its users and attract new ones by adapting to demand and by offering free software and public utility services like Google Photos, Google drive or Google docs with the aim of selling as many advertising space as possible.
But although Google is the most famous search engine, that does not mean that it remains the only choice of Internet users.
