Working from home is the new normal this year. Large IT companies, such as Twitter and Spotify, encourage employees to work from home. Online meetings and virtual conferences are replacing our traditional group meetings and discussions. Zoom is a leader with a high market share. The software can be complex for new users. During video calls, it can become annoying when audio / speakers are not working.

For example, you might have accidentally pressed the mute button, your PC / Mac might be connected to another bluetooth device, issues with sound settings, etc. If you are using Zoom and are having issues with audio, read on for our 8 solutions when audio from Zoom is not working or cannot be heard.

1. Merge Zoom video with computer audio

When you start the meeting on Zoom, the app gives you a few options to join the meeting. You can join the meeting directly with video and audio.

The Zoom app will show you the pop-up window for you to join Computer Audio when you tap on the New Meeting option. You can enable the option “Automatically join computer audio when joining a meeting”. The software will remember your settings and make sure you join the Zoom meeting with audio enabled.

2. Check the computer audio

This has happened to me several times. This is because the mute button appears on Apple MacBook. Sometimes I use the mute button on the keyboard to quickly mute the sound. MacBooks do not display the LED light indicating the mute button.

You can forget to reactivate it before the Zoom meeting. Press the F10 key and make sure your device’s audio is turned on again.

3. Select the device speakers in the zoom audio settings.

Zoom allows you to change the default meeting speakers. If you’re using your phone as a webcam or connected to third-party speakers, you need to make sure you’ve selected the correct accessory in the zoom audio settings.

Let me share what happened to me. I used mine iPhone as webcam on Zoom using EpocCam software. For this I downloaded the appropriate drivers and set up the service. During installation, I changed the audio zoom settings from the MacBook speakers to the EpocCam device.

The next time I tried running the meeting on the Zoom app, it remembered my last settings and tried using the EpocCam instead of the MacBook speakers for audio. When I wasn’t using the EpocCam app, I couldn’t hear the sound from the other side. So I had to go back to the MacBook speakers in Zoom settings> Audio to fix the problem.

4. Check the output volume from audio settings

It is always a good idea to check the output volume setting before starting an important meeting. Follow the steps below to test and adjust the volume in the Zoom app.

  1. Open the Zoom app on your device.
  2. Tap the Settings icon in the top right corner.
  3. Go to Audio Settings and use the slider and press the Speaker Test button to adjust the volume levels.

5. Turn off Bluetooth

You may have used Bluetooth on your PC or Mac to connect headphones or TWS (Total Wireless Stereo). Most users forget to turn off Bluetooth after use. The next time you join a Zoom meeting, it might use Bluetooth and connect to a paired device.

In these cases, you will not be able to hear the audio from your end. Make sure that you have turned off Bluetooth on your end and that it is not connected to any third party Bluetooth accessories.

6. Make sure the microphone is working on the other party’s side

The audio is working fine on your end. The problem may be on the other side. Zoom participants may have issues with the microphone on their end. You can ask them to kindly set the microphone so that you can hear them during the Zoom meeting.

7. Problems with audio drivers

The audio / speaker problem may be due to corrupted drivers on the PC. You need to update the audio driver on your Windows PC. Follow the steps to update them on your PC.

  1. Press the Windows button and type in Device Manager.
  2. Press Enter and Device Manager will open.
  3. From the Audio in and out option, you will find the Intel drivers and Realtek microphone responsible for using the phone microphone as the default microphone on video applications. Right click on the microphone and select Update Driver.
  4. Scroll down and navigate to Sound, video and game controllers.
  5. Right click on the audio drivers and update them (Realtek driver, in my case).

8. Update the Zoom app

Audio not playing on your Zoom app could be due to a software build bug on your device. Zoom releases updates frequently to resolve privacy issues and minor bugs.

Make sure the Zoom app is updated to the latest version. Open the Zoom app and tap the profile icon in the top right corner.

Scroll down to the ‘Check for updates’ options and the app will check for updates and notify you of the latest version available. Download and install the latest version to resolve audio issues on Zoom. A few days ago, the EpocCam service stopped working on my Zoom account. I updated the Zoom app to the latest version and the issue is resolved.
