Like any gadget, the Oculus Quest and Quest 2 can be subject to malfunctions, among them there is the black screen, in some cases the Oculus logo may appear before the black screen is triggered.
What are the causes of the black screen on Oculus Quest?
The appearance of a black screen can have more causes. Batteries may be flat, updates may be stuck, firmware may be corrupted, or there may be a problem or problems with the hardware.
What are the solutions and how to fix the Oculus Quest black screen?
To fix this black screen issue and get your Oculus working again, try the following tips:
- Be sure to load your Quest properly.
If it runs out of power, then you will only see a black screen. In this case, plug your headphones into a USB-C outlet of an AC charger for a quick charge. If nothing happens, then try another compatible charger, yours may be faulty, or plug it into your PC.
- Try opening the Oculus menu.
When facing the black screen, press the menu button on your left controller and the Oculus button on the right controller.
If that gives you access to the menu, open an app to see if that fixes the black screen issue.
- Check the Oculus app.
Load the Oculus app on your phone and sign in. If the connection does not happen automatically, then check if the app finds your headset, and try to launch a game from the app. After launching the game, put on your headset and check if the black screen issue has been rectified.
- Leave the headphones on and plugged in for at least 30 minutes.
If the headset tries to perform an update, give it time to proceed and finalize its operation. It should then return to normal operation.
- Check the proximity sensor.
Between the lenses of your helmet, you will find a small proximity sensor. Try covering it with your thumb to see if the black screen goes away. If that doesn’t work, clean the sensor with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Force restart.
Press and hold the power button for at least 10 seconds. This relaunch can fix many issues like black screen.
- Boot from the Bootloader menu.
Follow this trick if the previous solution doesn’t appeal to you, here’s how to do it: Press and hold the volume down and power buttons simultaneously, for at least 10 seconds, then highlight the boot device via the volume buttons. Finally, press the power button to restart your Quest.
- Perform a factory reset.
This is an extreme measure as it deletes all your data and restores it to its original state. This last chance solution is to be applied only if the 7 previous ones are not conclusive.
With this approach, you will lose all your saved data and have to re-download everything. Here’s how to do it: Press and hold the volume down and power buttons at the same time, for at least 10 seconds. Next, highlight the Factory Reset option using the volume buttons and then select Reset.
