Most commercial software is protected to prevent unauthorized installations or copies. Users are then asked to enter a product key or serial number to activate their product, which is the case for Microsoft Windows and Office.

This product key or serial number is in the form of a series of letters and / or numbers.

It is a unique identifier that the software decodes to verify that your copy is legal, and thanks to it, you are eligible for Microsoft support. It is therefore important to know where this number is located.

Also know that your Microsoft account replaces your product key for activating and reinstalling Office, for example.

In this tutorial, we show you how to get your hands on your Windows and Office product key.

Find your Windows product key

First of all, try to remember how you got the Microsoft software. This will allow you to determine where to look for the product key.

If you bought the Microsoft Windows or Office box (Retail license) then look inside or at the back of it. Product keys are usually written on a label affixed to the back or on a card placed inside the box.

The key consists of 25 alphanumeric characters, usually divided into groups of five.

PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

If Windows is preinstalled on your computer, then the software product key can be found on a multicolored Microsoft sticker affixed to your PC.

For Microsoft Office, you can find this label on the installation disc that came with the computer.

If you can’t find this key anywhere then you will need to contact Microsoft, which will provide you with a replacement key.

Windows 10 product key and digital license

With Windows 10, Microsoft created a new method of authenticating its operating system called digital right or license.

This digital right is only available if you migrate from a genuine copy of Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10, if you have purchased a Windows 10 upgrade or a genuine copy from the Microsoft Store.

This license allows you to activate Windows 10 automatically and for free on your PC. If, for example, you are in the case of a migration, then you will not need to enter a product key since it is kept in Microsoft’s servers.

Thus, your activation key is not lost.

Know that your digital rights are based on the configuration of your system. If you come to change hardware configuration from your PC or if you reinstall Windows 10, so you may lose this rightt.

Otherwise, to recover this right you can contact Microsoft’s License Activation Center.

On the other hand, if you got Windows 10 through the purchase of a new or refurbished PC, installation DVD, or digital copy of Windows 10 from an authorized reseller, then you are in possession of ‘a traditional product key.
